Margo Leavin Gallery at 812 N. Robertson Blvd

The gallery hosts 11 works by John Baldessari called Double Bill (Part 2).  This 81 year old artist has combined two photos of paintings plus his own painting to create very interesting large  works of art.  He chose two paintings that he thought would be interesting together such as David Hockney's 1966 "Sunbather" and Max Ernest's 1919 "Aquis Submersus",.  He takes parts of each and melds them together digitally and paints out distractions.  At the bottom of each painting he prints the name of one of the artists leaving you guessing the other one.  The painting below is the "...And Ernst" described above.

David Pagel, Los Angeles times critic, writes:  "The results of Baldessari's efforts are far more fascinating than is a description of the process that brought them into being... nothing less than a pleasure to behold, a thrill to comtemplate and a delight to dive into".
The other works are ...Leger, Gericault, Manet, de Chirico, Grosz, Gerard, Modigliani, Cezanne, Hockney, and Courbet.
